The Autistic Sports Nerd #113

Hey guys, the Autistic Sports Nerd here.

Lockouts

It seems that the NFL is on the verge of returning. Reports indicate that the players and owners are close to reaching an agreement and the lockout could end as early as this Monday. Thank goodness! I don't know if I could have handled it without football.

Basketball is a different story. Sources believe that the NBA will at the very least have a shortened season since the owners and players are so far a part. I hope there is a full season. Hey, miracles can happen right?

MLB

The National League defeated the American League for the second consecutive year after not winning one since 1996. That means whoever represents the National League will have home field advantage in the World Series. The National League (Basically the Phillies and Giants by themselves) have far superior pitching than the American League does and that's why they dominated this year's All-Star game.

I enjoyed the Home Run Derby the previous night. Robinson Cano and Adrian Gonzalez put on a heck of a show. They didn't fade in the later rounds, they only got stronger which we have never seen before in a Home Run Derby. Congratulations to Cano for winning it, especially with his father pitching to him.

Fransisco Rodriguez is now on the Brewers which should bolster their chances at winning the National League Central. How about them Pirates? Believe it or not, they are in the hunt. The National League Central is going to be interesting come September.

Women's World Cup Soccer

Congratulations to Japan for upsetting the United States and winning the World Cup. That was one of the greatest games I have ever seen. Just when the we thought the United States would win, Japan would come right back and tie it. The game took penalty kicks to decide and Japan won it.

I am a proud American but I have to hand it to Japan. They played incredible and it was a great feeling for Japan considering the tragedy the nation dealt with as the Tsunamis occurred earlier this year. It was a great tournament run by both teams and both teams played a great game. After watching that game, I dare somebody to tell me that soccer is a boring sport to watch.

PGA

Congratulations to Darren Clarke for winning the 2011 British Open. Another golfer from Northern Ireland wins a Major. I am noticing a trend here. Norther Ireland is invading the golf world.

WWE

Wow, what a match between CM Punk and John Cena at Money in the Bank on July 17th. It was in Chicago, Punk's hometown. The crowd was electric, just an incredible atmosphere. Punk's contract (storyline and real-life wise)would expire an hour after the PPV concluded and Punk vowed to win the Title and leave the WWE with it.

In a near forty minute match, Punk won. I think that was the Match of the Year so far. Chicago has one of the greatest wrestling crowds in the country.

The next night on RAW (storyline wise I'm assuming) Triple H told Vince McMahon that the Board of Directors have not liked the decisions he has been making and as a result, Triple H is taking over as the head honcho of WWE.

Punk has interrupted WWE panels this week which leads me to believe that in real-life, Punk and the WWE have come up with some type of agreement. What will become of the title that Punk currently holds? Only time will tell.

The Summer Trends

Hey guys, the Autistic Sports Nerd here.

Every summer for the past four years, there seems to be a trend of annoying sagas that seem to drag on and on. They takeover Sports Center and ESPNEWS. Let's backtrack.

In 2008, it was the Summer of Favre. We all thought that Bret Favre retired with the Green Bay Packers. Then he announced that he wanted to return to the NFL. Green Bay already groomed Aaron Rodgers to be their starter so they weren't thrilled and we as viewers suffered. Every time you turned on ESPN or ESPNEWS you would see the same highlight montage of Bret Favre and it got really annoying. If you wanted to check scores and watch highlights, you ended up seeing and hearing about Bret Favre. Favre finally made his decision and signed with the New York Jets.

In 2009 it was the just as annoying sequel, the Summer of Favre II.

Favre retired from Football again, then he wanted to return-again. Same thing as 2008. The saga ended when Favre signed with the Vikings.

In 2010 it was the summer of LeBron's decision and the rest of the NBA Free Agents. This was a chaotic summer with a lot of suspense. I was happy Amar'e Stoudemire signed with the Knicks. LeBron took forever to make his decision. This dragged on forever. That's all you heard about on the ESPN channels. Favre must have been really jealous. His summer was stolen by LeBron. "The King" finally announced his decision via an hour long special on ESPN and we were baffled by his egoism. We all cringed with fear when he announced that he was joining Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh and the rest of the Miami Heat. The most of us laughed when the Heat lost in the NBA Finals, especially after LeBron claimed that "they would win not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven...." during their firework filled welcoming party.

Now in 2011, it's the Summer of the Lockouts.

That Favre Retirement/Returning Saga actually sound pretty good compared to hearing and witnessing the NFL and the NBA going into lockouts. We may not have the NFL nor NBA this year and that really makes me sad. Football is football and the Knicks are finally good again. All I have been hearing about this summer are the lockouts.

The question is, what will the saga be in 2012? Will it be a Summer of Favre III? For that to happen, the NFL Owners and Player' Association have to reach an agreement. Will it be a new saga unlike anything we have ever seen before?

Man, whatever happened to those summers when we just watched baseball, heard MLB Trade rumors, and a little bit of golf?

Wiffleball Game on Fathers Day 2011

My family had another Wiffle Ball game on Father's Day. It was Adults (me included) vs. the Kids. For the Adults, it was Uncle Johnny, Uncle Brian, and I vs. Stephen, Kevin, Sean, C.J.

We batted first and built a 3-0 lead in the first inning. In the bottom half of the first, the kids rallied and tied the game at three. With the bases loaded, Stephen hit a grand slam to put the kids up 7-3.

John Sterling: It's Ha-Gone!

Stephen O'Hagan, Ha-Gone-get it?

In the bottom of the third inning, I was on the mound. I struck Kevin out.

Sean: Kevin, how do you get struck out by A.J?

Kevin throws the ball at Sean and they have a brief physical altercation.

I struck out Sean the next time, I face him and he grounded out to me with the Bases loaded as well.

The Adults built a rally and managed to take a 9-7 lead. However, the Kids will tie the game at nine, and with two runners on base, Stephen hit a three run home run to put the Kids up 12-9.

Our ninth inning rally fell short and the Kids won 12-10 after I popped out for the final out of the game with two runners on base. We all shook hands with each other after the game. It was a great game and can't wait to play again.

The Autistic Sports Nerd #109

Hey guys, the Autistic Sports Nerd here.

MLB

Congratulations to Derek Jeter for getting his 3,000th hit of his career. His 3,000th hit was a home run. The only other player to get his 3,000th hit by hitting a home run was Wade Boggs in 1999 with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

It was not only a great moment for Jeter but a great day as well. He went 5-5. He hit a home run, a double, and three singles including getting the game winning R.B.I in the bottom of the eight inning to help the Yankees win 5-4 over the Tampa Bay Rays. He was just a triple short of the cycle.

Derek Jeter is one of the classiest players in sports. He never gets in trouble off the field, always great in the clutch and he doesn't cheat by using steroids. He always plays hard and gives it 100% every play. I read his autobiography and it was a great book explaining how he wanted to be a Yankee all of his life. He gave great advice to never settle for good enough. You need to be the best that you can be.

There are moments that define a player's career and Jeter's five hit performance today and getting to 3,000 during it is definitely one of those defining moments for the Captain. I can't wait to see him get inducted into the Hall of Fame.

NFL and NBA Lockout

The moment we feared has finally happened. Both the NFL and the NBA are in lockouts. It's going to be a big blow if there are no NBA and NFL seasons next year. I don't care whose fault it is between the players and the owners, I just want basketball and football to happen.Hopefully the owners and the players can come up with an agreement within the two sports or otherwise we the viewers and fans will be the ones suffering.

Top NBA stars including Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire are hoping to play in Europe while the lockout is going on. They are not protected under their contract if they play in Europe so if they play there and get injured, they are in trouble.

Yao Ming has announced his retirement. He was a great player but was plagued by injuries for years that forced him to retire. Tough break for Yao and I wish him the best.

NHL

Jagr to the Flyers? That's odd but it's true. Jaromir Jagr is back in the NHL and will be playing for the Flyers. The Rangers get Brad Richards which is huge for the Broadway Blueshirts. He fills their needs at the Center position, the first line, and on the power-play unit. The Rangers are definitely Stanley Cup contenders now.

Odd start for this upcoming season for the Rangers. They play the Kings and the Ducks in Europe (Counts as away games for the Rangers) and after a game at Nassau Coliseum, they play four games in Western Canada before finally they open up at Madison Square Garden against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The reason for the long road trip is because Madison Square Garden is currently undergoing renovations.

The Rangers will play the Flyers in the Winter Classic on January 2nd at Citizen Banks Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies. That should be an awesome game. At least the NHL will have a season next year.

Tragedy

A tragedy occurred the other night at the Texas' Rangers game against the Oakland Athletics. A 39 year old man tried to catch a ball thrown to him but fell over the rail, twenty feet down, and died. He was with his child. Really sad to hear. No one is at fault here, it was an accident. I express my condolences to his entire family and friends.
